About Casablanca

Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco and the country’s economic and business capital. Facing the Atlantic Ocean in the central-west of the country, it is home to more than three million people, the national stock exchange, and one of the busiest ports in Africa, as well as the headquarters of many Moroccan and international companies.

It is also a very visible example of the questions ISGTA asks. The city has been building a modern tram network, while Morocco as a whole has made renewable energy a national priority.

What to see

  • Hassan II Mosque. Built partly over the ocean, with one of the tallest minarets in the world, this is the city’s landmark. Guided tours are open to visitors of all faiths.
  • Downtown architecture. Casablanca is known for its Art Deco and Mauresque buildings, many of them around Mohammed V Square and the Central Market.
  • The Old Medina and the Corniche. Walk the old city’s lanes, then follow the Atlantic seafront at Aïn Diab.

Getting here

  • By air. Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) is Morocco’s main international gateway.
  • From the airport. Trains run from the airport station into the city, taking about 30 minutes to Casa-Voyageurs station. Check times with ONCF, the national rail operator. Taxis are also available outside the terminal.
  • By rail. ONCF trains connect Casablanca with Rabat, Marrakech, Fès and, by high-speed train, Tangier.
  • Getting around. The tramway serves much of the city, alongside buses and taxis.
